An orthopaedic sandal does not have to be the beige thing from the pharmacy. What we looked for: models you would actually wear with a summer dress, that still hold the foot properly — a supported arch, a little cushioning under the heel, and a strap that adjusts instead of cutting into the instep.

Where they change things is the long day on your feet. If you walk a lot, if your feet get hot or swell by late afternoon, you feel the difference on the first outing. The footbed spreads the load instead of concentrating everything under the forefoot, and the wedge stays low enough to be stable on cobbles or on sand.
