S'habiller selon sa morphologie : le guide sans complexes

Dress for Your Body Type: The No-Nonsense Guide

Let us settle one thing first: there is no good or bad body shape. There is nothing to correct and no flaw to hide. There is your body, and it is fine as it is.

This guide is not about hiding. It is about showing off what you like and feeling steady in your clothes, whatever your height, weight or shape.

Five broad silhouettes

Hourglass

Shoulders and hips in line, waist clearly defined. Naturally balanced curves.

What works: fitted dresses that follow the line. Belts at the waist. Wrap dresses. V-necks.

Pear (triangle)

Hips wider than shoulders. The most common shape there is, and one of the easiest to dress.

What works: volume up top (puff sleeves, a soft shoulder). A-line dresses. Straight or flared trousers. Darker below, lighter above.

Inverted triangle

Shoulders wider than hips. Often athletic and long-limbed.

What works: wide-leg trousers and flared skirts to even things out. Closer-fitting tops. V-necklines to lengthen the upper body.

Rectangle

Shoulders, waist and hips roughly aligned. Balanced by default.

What works: belts to create a waist. Dresses with ruffles for movement. Nipped-in blazers. Pleated skirts.

Round

Volume sits around the bust and middle, with slimmer arms and legs.

What works: empire-line dresses. Fluid fabrics that skim. Necklines that lengthen. Solid colours. Show your arms and legs, they are your strongest cards.

Three rules that hold for everyone

  1. The waist is your friend: marking it with a belt, a fitted seam or an empire line gives any outfit structure in one move.
  2. Fabric beats cut: a good fabric that falls properly will always flatter more than a stiff, cheap one, whatever the shape.
  3. Comfort is not optional: if you tug at a garment every five minutes, everyone can see it. Buy things you can move, breathe and live in.

What colour actually does

No rigid rules, but a few things are true:

  • Dark colours recede, so use them where you want less attention
  • Light and bright colours pull the eye, so use them where you want it
  • One colour head to toe lengthens the whole silhouette
  • Vertical stripes lengthen and horizontal ones widen, though far less than people believe

Stop hiding

The instinct is to reach for something loose and dark. It rarely works. Fabric with no shape to it just reads as more fabric.

Real elegance is showing your structure. Not necessarily skin, just shape. A soft blouse tucked into high-waisted trousers, a dress fitted in the right place, shoes that lengthen the leg: that is the whole difference.

Your body is not the problem. Badly cut clothes are. Change the clothes.

Have a look at the shop. Pieces cut to work on real shapes, from S to XXL.
